Why this dreamer has always loved Christmas
As I write this early on Christmas eve, Christmas has always been a really nostalgic time for me.
I remember being just seven or eight years old and would spend hours staring out of the window, looking for any hints of snowflakes. Sometimes I’d imagine them, often they wouldn’t come. Or they would, eventually come, and then it wouldn’t settle. Or it would settle, but it would quickly melt.
I haven’t ever witnessed a white Christmas, and what I would consider proper, deep snow. Though I do recalled two “snow days: at secondary school.
I used to be so excited about Father Christmas coming to deliver presents. I was in awe of the fact that this great big, kind man had been here overnight, had a sip of the drink and some bites of the food we’d left out for him, and his reindeer. I could barely get to sleep on Christmas Eve, out of the pure excitement.
Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings were both films which came out around Christmas time, two film series which really stood out to me. The first time I watched the first Harry Potter film when it came out at the cinema, I went home and dreamt that I was at Hogwarts. It was the best dream I ever had.
Christmas carols, singing together in Church. Being away with the family in Berlin, Florida and Switzerland. Wintery train journeys through the Swiss Alps. Hot chocolate.
Watching Laurel and Hardy on BBC2, or the National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation, or Die Hard or — strangely — Rush Hour.
I have some really fond memories of Christmas. Something about warm fuzzy feelings, snow, and quality time spent with loved ones.
Just this evening, I had a lovely evening with two of my best friends and — as we are entering the final week of 2018 — quality time with others will be a big priority for me.
I finally got round to doing the “Love Languages” test, and I was actually quite surprised — and yet also not so surprised — that my #1 was quality time and by a fairly big margin.
One of the realisations I’ve made this year is that connection with others is a huge deal for me. As I reflect on Christmases of the past, many of the fond memories are around time spent with my loved ones.
That’s what this time of year is about for me and — I mustn’t forget — what I want to integrate into my life and not neglect.
Here’s to a very merry, magical Christmas to everyone.

Jasraj
