Of course, we all know that writing our books, websites, blogs, etc. is the fun part of being an Indie Author. The more challenging part of being INDEPENDENT is marketing our own writing since traditionally, that was all left to the publisher.

I have been selling books online since around 2006, when I sold them on my website in pdf form, and since I had almost zero advice on how to market them, I learned a few things on my own about online marketing that I will share here.

Search Engine Optimization...

Search Engine Optimization was the most crucial thing back in 2006 and it still is today. If you want to be successful marketing your material, you have to know your keywords and how to get your writing on the first page of search engines. For more information, click here.

Social Media...

Back in 2006, Yahoo Groups were big, so that is where I began. I joined every Yahoo Group related to my niche that would have me and became involved. I mentioned my books whenever appropriate, and at the end of every post, I included a signature that led people to my website.

Nowadays, Facebook Groups seem to be the place to be, along with any active independent forums you find online, and any large Yahoo Groups you find that are still active. When you join these groups, be sure to follow their rules on signature lines and link posting. Post as often as you can.

Free articles & guest blogs...

Write free articles or guest blogs for other more popular sites in your genre or niche, but include a stipulation that your signature and a link to your website be included with the publication of your work.

Articles for paid sites...

Write articles for a few of the paid article sites and include a link back to your website. Sometimes these sites get better standing in search engines than a standalone website and can be a great advantage in making people aware of your work.

Online networking...

Just as if you were marketing a local business, join communities wherever you self-publish and NETWORK! Ask other Indie Author friends to exchange book reviews with you. Or exchange website links with them.
